UROP with MITSETDescription All members are expected to devote approximately five to ten hours of work per week during the school year. Applicants must be willing to take a proactive stance on the project, be capable of meeting deadlines and be observant of problems within the project. Every member is expected to have a working knowledge of the project such that he or she can effectively explain design rationale to interested members of the public. All applicants need strong communication and analytical skills. Since most of the design will be taking place within a team structure, individuals are expected to work well in a team setting. The project is run by the senior engineers, but individuals within the team are expected to take leadership positions throughout the project. General Engineer (1-3 positions) A general engineer will be expected to handle various engineering assignments as they arise in MITSET`s control system, mechanical system, motors, test structure and overall operation of the climber. These include design, analysis, implementation, and testing of various components and subsystems of the project. Individuals will elicit problems with current design, suggest changes to fix these problems, analyze how and why these changes will perform better, and implement them. A background in basic physics and engineering is required. Individuals will be asked to perform trade studies to determine the relative effects of various design choices. A background in design and analysis software such as Solidworks, Matlab, Gnuplot, and Excel is highly recommended. Electrical Engineer (2-4 positions) An electrical engineer will be expected to handle various engineering assignments as they arise in MITSET`s unique electrical generation and distribution system. These include design, analysis, implementation, and testing of various components and subsystems of the project. Individuals will elicit problems with current design, suggest changes to fix these problems, analyze how and why these changes will perform better, and implement them. Individuals will concentrate on the microwave system, including generation, conversion, and storage of power. This position requires an individual with basic understanding of electromagnetic theory. Additionally, the applicant must be willing and capable of design, prototyping, and application of the final product in the conditions of the requirements. An understanding of circuitry and power storage and experience with microwave sources and antennas is preferred. Senior Engineer (Electrical or General) (2-3 positions) A senior engineer will be expected to not only meet the requirements for the engineering field in which he or she works (see above for details), but will also be expected to lead work sessions with other team members. Positions are available in for the control subsystem, power subsystem and climber subsystem. Experience with actual design of projects is required. Summer UROP MITSET is offering a limited number of paid UROPs during the summer. The project`s focus during the summer will be the implementation and operation of the current design and possibly another design iteration of the system. Individuals will be expected to work eight hours a day, five days a week throughout the summer. Vacation time will be determined on an individual basis as necessary. Each member is expected to be punctual, proactive, imaginative and capable of adapting to various fields within the project. If, you are interested, please Apply here |
