About Us

MITSET`s focus is preparing students for the challenges involved with tackling a real world engineering project by involving them with actual design in a competitive environment. Students will gain experience in designing, building, and operating a complex engineering system.

Currently, the team focuses on the NASA Centennial Space Elevator Challenge, a competition sponsored by NASA that is scheduled to run until 2010. Teams are required to build a climbing system that works its way up a 100 meter ribbon and is powered by a power beaming system. The project is multidisciplinary in nature with challenges ranging from microwave transmission to mechanical design and integrated control systems. Students can expect to tackle problems including system optimization, thermal control, microwave transmission and reception, control system design, and climber construction.
